My First Six months in Recruitment

We asked Paddy Fegan, specialist Engineering & Manufacturing Recruitment Consultant at Black Fox Solutions, about the personal ups and downs he experienced in his first 6 months in the job.

Why did you choose a career in Recruitment?

Probably like a lot of other people in our industry, I sort of stumbled into Recruitment. When I applied for the job, I had been working as a debt recovery agent for a utility supplier for two years and realised that I wasn’t where I wanted to be at this stage in my life. I was looking for a job that I could turn into a real career, where I would be rewarded financially and have the opportunity to progress within a growing company.

Why did you choose Black Fox Solutions?

It was actually a friend of mine that first told me about the vacancy for a Trainee consultant at Black Fox. The advert really stressed that this was the type of job that you can get out of it, what you put in – it was exactly what I was looking for. At the interview, our director Max and my colleague Jack told me about the role, their plans for the company and how I would contribute to that, I knew straight away that this was the job for me. Thankfully, they felt the same.

How were your first 6 months in recruitment?

It was definitely a bit of a whirlwind. Before I started, all I knew about a Recruitment Consultants day-to-day was that they ‘found people jobs’, but looking back now, I realise that the in-house training I received gave me a firm foundation to be successful in this industry.

What was your lowest point?

I think my lowest point was about a month after I finished my initial training, I was starting to speak with clients, qualify candidates and arrange interviews for open vacancies; surrounded by my colleagues I realised that I really needed to step my game up to reach their level. Recruitment is the type of industry where your reward is equal to the amount of effort you put into it. I came to the realisation that being successful in our industry means consistently doing the things you need to do, rather than just the aspects of the job you want to.

What’s been your highest point?

I get a massive buzz from placing a great candidate within a company I now they’ll do well in, and that definitely one of the nest aspects of my job. One of my highest points though has been seeing the improvements in my own life. I was always looking for a job where I could build a career and be better off financially, and I can see that beginning to happen already. My overall confidence has really improved over the last 6 months, as has my skills as a communicator. I feel very lucky to enjoy going to work in the morning.
