What makes a great sales CV

When you are applying for a new job in sales, it’s important that you remember your CV is all the Recruitment Consultant or Hiring Manager will have to decide if you are right or wrong for the position.

No matter how great a salesperson you are, unless you can accurately reflect this in your CV you will be passed over. With this in mind, I’d like to share some of the factors that make a great sales CV with you.


Detail
Providing relevant detail is essential. There is a massive difference between including in your CV that you “successfully managed a sales team”, and that you “successfully managed a team of 8 sales executives who generated £3.4 million in the last financial year and increased new business by 30%”. Use details to back up your achievements.


Numbers and Figures
More so than in any other job, numbers and figures are essential in a top sales CV. Make sure to include the revenue you produced in your previous positions, your targets and the amount of time it took you to hit them.


Context
Depending on the job, making £5,000 worth of sales per month may not sound that impressive. However, if the cost per unit of your product is 50p, then the impression of your abilities will be seen in a much different light. Provide context whenever possible to highlight your achievements. “Top Salesperson in February” is much more of an achievement if we know that you have 100 other salespersons in competition with you.


Tailoring
Just like delivering an excellent pitch to your client, it’s important when writing a sales CV to tailor the content to match the requirements of the job you are applying for. If you have relevant technical knowledge then make sure you include it. If the job requires someone with the ability to drive new business, then ensure that you discuss the amount of new business you generated in your current/previous role.
